What is a Shrub?

What is a Shrub?  It’s the winning recipe in our July Members Only “Creative Cocktails” Contest!

To be more specific, a “shrub” is a cocktail that is made with a vinegar syrup, spirits and carbonated water.  They are also often infused with fruit juice, herbs and spices in mixed drink recipes.

Wait until you try this winning recipe for a “Blackberry-Sage Shrub” from CCC member Michaela Rosenthal!

Michaela’s entry is a genius shortcut version of a shrub.  Instead of making her own sweetened vinegar syrup, she uses blackberry balsamic vinegar.  It gives the cocktail a bit of zing with a hint of sweetness. The use of fresh blackberries, vanilla vodka and fresh sage makes this recipe a sophisticated cocktail that’s perfect for entertaining.

This recipe is great as we transition into the fall months. In fact, I think this Blackberry-Sage Shrub would be a wonderful addition to your Thanksgiving menu!

How did you come up with your winning recipe?  

A few years ago I discovered “shrubs” a vinegar and fruit cocktail mixer. I make my own shrubs now, but if I do not have the flavor I need, I use a fruit balsamic in its place.

Do you have an award-winning tips or recipe contest advice?

My advice regarding entering cooking contests is to stick to what you are passionate about, don’t just enter everything you see. You will achieve a much higher percentage of wins!

Do you have any plans for the prize?  

My plans for the prize – Investing in more liqueurs and bitters for my home bar!
